(ADELINE is sitting cross-legged on a pale pink couch. She wears a plain white dress, her hair is down, she has dark circles under her eyes. Across from her sits a man in khaki pants, shirt and tie, and a blazer. He holds a clip board, a manila folder, and a pen. Two cups of water rest on the table between them, one full, one half full.)

DOCTOR

Adeline, you have to talk to us. We tried to cooperate before, but these games are getting old.

(ADELINE remains silent. Her eyes are focused on the floor.)

DOCTOR

I don’t want to have to do this the hard way. That’s not why I come here to your room everyday. I want to help you. Let’s not make this difficult today, Adeline.

(NURSE enters stage right.)

NURSE

Ah, Doctor. I see you’ve returned today. Again. I don’t think she wants to talk to you today, do you Adeline?

(ADELINE’s eyes stay on the floor.)

NURSE

Why don’t you go for now? Let’s keep this afternoon simple. Adeline needs her rest, okay?

(NURSE moves stage left, away from the couch. The DOCTOR leans towards ADELINE.)

DOCTOR

I know it probably seems like my visits are too much, but we at West Park just want the best for our patients.

(NURSE walks over to the couch.)

NURSE

I’m going to get some coffee, would you like some, Doctor?

DOCTOR

We don’t need to use these formalities anymore. Please, call me Stan. And yes, I’d love some coffee.

(NURSE begins to walk away when DOCTOR grabs her by the wrist.)

DOCTOR

Don’t forget.

(Smiling)

No cream.

ADELINE

(Voice barely above a whisper.)

Please stop.
